Working out to your latest jam is not only a method of entertainment to keep our multi-tasking crazed society occupied while climbing the stair master, but there are various other physical and mental benefits.
For starters listening to music will distract you from working out. Instead of focusing on how many reps or minutes left you’ll be distracted by the beat.
Don’t believe me? Have you ever heard and energetic beat that makes you want to get up and dance or move around? Listening to these upbeat songs will help you to step up your intensity without even realizing it. Your performance can increase up to 15 percent.
Creating a playlist for yourself with songs that motivate you can help you workout longer and make a bigger impact. The New York Times recommends songs with a tempo between 120-140 BPM (Beats Per Minute). This can change depending on your workout. If you’re sprinting try something a little faster and perhaps a slower tempo for walking. For example, Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone,” may not be conducive for a yoga practice.
Music is also a great way to time your workout. If you want to workout for 45 minutes make a playlist with 12 or 13 songs (give or take). Kick-Ass 2‘s Lindy Booth admitted to Self Magazine that she listens to the entire Les Miserables soundtrack while running.
