Rachel Sleeter Named Skyline Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week
Senior Rachel Sleeter, from Hyde Park, of the Mount Saint Mary College women’s cross country team was named Skyline Conference Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20, 2013, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 21.
Sleeter took the top spot at the 2013 York College Invitational on Sunday with a 6K time of 24:43, leading the Knights to a first-place finish out of 11 teams. This was her second top-place finish of the season, and her third top-three finish.
Matt Darling Named Skyline Men’s Soccer Player of the Week
Senior goalkeeper Matt Darling, from Staatsburg, of the Mount Saint Mary College men’s soccer team was named Skyline Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20, 2013, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 21.
Darling picked up two shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for the Knights. Darling made eight saves across 110 minutes on Friday, Oct. 18, keeping Farmingdale State off the board in a 0-0 tie.
He followed up this performance with another shutout on Sunday Oct. 20, this time in a 10-0 victory over Yeshiva. He made two saves in the win. Darling now has six shutouts on the season and a goals against average of 1.05.
Men’s Golf Finishes Fourth at Skylines; Sosler Named Coach of the Year; Heath to All-Skyline Second Team
The Mount Saint Mary College men’s golf team concluded its first-ever trip to the Skyline Conference Championships with a fourth-place finish at Bethpage Red on Monday, Oct. 21. Head coach Steve Sosler was named Skyline Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, and freshman Owen Heath, from Jamestown, R.I., was named to the All-Skyline Second Team.
The Knights finished with a two-day total of 652 (+92) after finishing with a 323 (+43). Farmingdale State College took home the conference title with a total score of 585 (+25), while The Sage Colleges were the runner-ups at 642 (+82). Purchase College took third with a 644 (+84). St. Joseph’s College (L.I.) finished one stroke behind the Knights, taking fifth place with a 653 (+93). Yeshiva University took sixth with a total score of 685 (+125), while The College at Old Westbury finished seventh with a 733 (+173).
Heath moved up to take sole possession of ninth place after shooting a 76 (+6) on Monday. He finished with a total of 157 (+17). Sophomore Mike Balokoz, from Milford, Conn., and senior Stephen McGrory, from Whitestone, N.Y., tied for 14th with two-day totals of 163 (+23). Each shot an 81 (+11) on Monday. Junior Steven Etherton, from Lawrenceville, N.J., took 22nd with a total of 169 (+29) with an 85 (+15) on Monday. Senior Kyle Bitsco, from Stratford, Conn., rounded out the tournament for the Knights with a 173 (+33) after an 88 (+18) on Monday to take 26th place.
Farmingdale’s five golfers took five of the top six places over the course of the two-day tournament. Adam Larkin took first with a 143 (+3), Scott Sessions grabbed second with a 145 (+5) and Matt Pollock finished third with a 149 (+9).
The Knights had an average finish between third and fourth place in the five matches in which they participated in their inaugural season, earning Sosler his first Coach of the Year award for men’s golf. Heath averaged 79.83 strokes per round this season (+9.83), earning him Second-Team All-SUNYAC honors.
Claire Scully Grabs Second Skyline Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week Award
Freshman setter Claire Scully, from Bloomfield, N.J., of the Mount Saint Mary College women’s volleyball team was named Skyline Conference Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20, 2013, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 21. This is her second time winning the award this season.
Scully had a strong showing in the Knights’ 1-1 week. In Saturday, Oct. 19’s first contest, a 3-0 sweep of Brooklyn College, she dished out 31 assists. She followed with a season-high 45 assists in an eventful 3-2 loss to William Paterson University. She added 10 digs and six service aces in the loss. Across the two matches, she averaged 9.5 assists, 1.75 digs and 1.13 service aces per set.
Shanice Robe Earns Another ECAC Division III Metro Player of the Week Honor
Sophomore forward Shanice Robe, from Valley Stream, of the Mount Saint Mary College women’s soccer team was named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Region Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 20, 2013, as announced by the ECAC office on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
She was also named Skyline Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the same time period. This is the second time in just three weeks that Robe has earned this award.
Robe scored five goals in a 2-0 week for the Knights. She scored a pair of late goals in a 4-1 victory over Bard on Tuesday, and then followed up with a hat trick against Maritime College in a 6-0 victory on Friday. Robe now has 21 goals and 44 points in 14 games for the Knights this season.
