Change is a constant here at Mount Saint Mary College and Kaplan is no exception. This summer, the Athletic Department has stepped up its game and renovated The Kaplan Recreation Center.
When you first walk in, your eyes are drawn to the words “Excellence,” “Tradition,” and “Integrity” inscribed on the wall. New furniture has been added while the main lobby is now resplendent with a blue and gold color scheme. Digital signage televisions are also a new addition that display the sport’s schedules. The lobby is completed with vibrant banners of each sport offered at the Mount.
The cardio and weight rooms have likewise been revamped with new state of the art equipment. A Stairmaster, five treadmills, four ellipticals, and four stationary bikes – two of which have virtual video game access with social media capabilities – have been added to the cardio room. The reorganized weight room is now home to two platforms and squat racks. In addition to the lobby and workout room changes, a spare room has been converted to a recruitment lounge and trophy room where prospective athletes can meet with the Mount’s coaches.
A Hall of Fame has also been added to the Kaplan lobby. One side of the Hall of Fame is dedicated to the Kaplan family, for whom the building is named. The other side will soon feature an ”Athletics at the Mount” touchscreen television to use as a reference for The Hall of Fame. The first class of the Hall is scheduled to be announced in February.
Other renovations are still in the process of being finished. These include a display of the 2012 Athlete Photo and a life-sized athlete photomural representing all 17 sport teams.
