Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), a school the MSMC Women’s Volleyball Team have had a reputation of losing to time and time again, finally lost their track record last week. On Saturday Sept. 3, the Lady Knights traveled to Scranton, New Jersey to compete in a five game tournament against their rivals, with luck on their side for a change.

The five-set tournament opener was a close one for the Knights, who won the first two sets: 25-17 and 25-23, respectively. The team, a considerably small one compared to the average height of most other teams, refused to give up, even when they started falling behind in points, ultimately losing the next two sets: 25-15 in the third, and 25-10 in the fourth.

The three captains, Kristen Maddock, setter, Rachel Sabatini, outside hitter, and Angelina Cirigliano, also an outside hitter, turned the tables on FDU when they led their team past the opposition in the decisive fifth set, winning by a score of 15-13. The MSMC Women’s Volleyball Team worked hard for what would end up being their only victory on the day.

The win both demonstrated the small-statured team’s willingness to exceed expectations, and also may have given the coaches and team members alike a boost of confidence, as freshmen Emily Mazzurcl, Morgan Berk, and Maddie Barberan, earned the rare opportunity to play in the game.

Hopefully this is just the start of future victories against even more difficult competition to come.
