50 Mount Saint Mary College (MSMC) students gathered on Wed. Nov. 12 for the kickoff to one of the biggest events of the spring semester, Relay for Life.

Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) welcomed everyone to the event, offering fresh fruit and desserts to the attendees while surprising them with the theme for this year: Superheroes.

Last year for Relay, Mount students raised over $47,000 for the organization, so it was no surprise to CAC when the Dominican Center was packed with people ready to fight.

While ideas were buzzing amongst the prospective teams, they were reminded on why they Relay in the first place.

Years ago, only one out of three people who were diagnosed with cancer survived. Now, it’s two out of three. The mission is to make it three out of three. With the money raised through Relay and the programs provided, it can be possible.

Relay For Life is held overnight because, as representatives from CAC explained, “cancer doesn’t sleep, so neither do we.”

With kickoff finished, students can now start registering their team, join a team, and start to raise money for the event. This year’s goal is $50,000, but they are confident that it can be done due to the passionate students that are here at the Mount.

Relay for Life will be held Mar. 27 in the Kaplan Gym.
