On Tuesday, February 5, 2013, Campus Ministry and the Counseling Center hosted a student-driven talk in the Knight Spot as a follow up to Donna Freitas’ lecture on her award-winning book, Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance, and Religion on America’s College Campuses. The discussion was facilitated by Father Francis Amodio and Dr. Orin Strauchler.

The talk took the form of an open forum, which served as a means for students to reflect upon their views of the “hook-up” culture at Mount Saint Mary College. The group was intimate (no pun intended), with a total of six students. At first, it was a bit awkward talking to a priest about sex. After a while, however, students opened up and expressed how they really felt.

When Father Francis was asked why he thinks it is so important for students to talk about the “hook-up” culture on the campus, he responded, “Because when things are not talked about, they become silent and underground, and many misconceptions can take place. When one talks in an open non-judgmental way, maybe we can see the pros and cons of the issue, and we can be honest with each other. Maybe what everybody says is not necessarily true.”

It is safe to say that this is the kind of conversation that needs to happen more frequently on the campus. Campus Ministry and the Counseling Center invite you to join them on Tuesday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 19 at 8:30pm in the Knight Spot to continue and expand upon the previous talk.

Don’t forget to bring your opinions. Let’s talk about sex.
