Newburgh–Giraffes invaded Facebook last week.
“I noticed that a whole bunch of people had changed their profile pictures to a giraffe, and I was like, ‘What is this all about?’” Mount Saint Mary College junior Kelsey Miley said. The answer is simple, though some may find it disappointing to find out Facebook was not taken over by social-media-crazed giraffes.
A new trend swept across the Facebook community: a riddle. Many Facebookers posted the riddle as their statuses that said: “3 a.m., the doorbell rings and you wake up. Unexpected visitors. It’s your parents, and they are there for breakfast. You have strawberry jam, honey, wine, bread and cheese. What is the first thing you open?”
Readers were to message the answer to the person who posted the status, and people came up with some creative answers.
“Well, I would say wine,” senior Rachel McGinty said. “If my parents were knocking on my door at 3 a.m., I would definitely need a glass of wine.”
“Cheese,” senior Sarah Favata said. “That’s the only one I like out of those options anyways.”
Both answers, however, are wrong.
“I said the door,” senior Stephen Doster said. Many Facebookers provided the same answer, but they too were wrong. And of course, there were consequences for those who answered incorrectly. They had to change their profile pictures to a giraffe for at least three days.
Why a giraffe? No one knows.
“I wasn’t going to do it at first,” Doster said, “but I had been studying my ecology PowerPoint and there was a giraffe on one of the slides. It was a funny looking picture, so I posted it as my profile picture.” His profile picture has been a giraffe for longer than the required three days, but he said he’s going to keep it up since he has nothing better to post.
While Doster took part in the Facebook craze, many MSMC students did not.
“I saw all of the giraffe pictures, and I had no idea what was going on,” senior Karen Neary said. “When I found out about it, I answered the riddle. I got it wrong, but I didn’t change my profile picture. I like my picture that I have up right now.”
Some students had different reasons for not taking part in the latest Facebook trend.
“The whole thing looked silly,” sophomore Marcus Barton said. “I didn’t feel like expending the effort to change my picture.”
Some didn’t respond so well to the riddle itself, not even giving it a second glance. “It’s similar to another riddle I’ve heard,” senior Amy Battaglia said. “Nothing new.”
Some may not have participated in the craze, but still, enough Facebookers participated, making it look like giraffes had taken over Facebook.
So, what would you open first at 3 a.m. when your parents are standing at your door? Jam? Cheese? Maybe some wine? No, your eyes, of course, since you were most likely sleeping.
