Pass the tissues; it’s another Nicholas Sparks movie. Safe Haven starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhmel previews on Valentine’s Day. Ladies be prepared to cry, and men, get ready to be forever compared to the likes of Noah, Landon, and John.
Ladies need to realize that all these leading men are fictional (many written by women writers), and men need to realize that being cheesy can go a long way sometimes. So, here are some non Nicholas Sparks classics to make the ladies’ hearts melt and give the men some pointers.
1. 10 Things I Hate About You
While reading Shakespeare might be romantic and sweet, it also sounds completely nauseating. However, this movie is the perfect combination of “awe” and “haha” for a relationship in any stage. A modern twist on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew will keep your Valentine’s Day romantic and sassy. Ladies will love Heath Ledger singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and guys will love that Robin and the Joker went to the same high school.
2. She’s the Man
This is the last Shakespeare inspired movie, promise! While cross dressing and stealing another’s identity doesn’t seem to be romantic, it is when Channing Tatum gets involved. Tatum makes cute puppy dog faces and is the sensitive hunk with abs you can iron a shirt on, while Amanda Bynes is quirky and comical. There’s soccer thrown in and some great quotable lines. This movie is completely light hearted so there will be no need to stock up on Kleenex.
3. Ice Castles
This is a movie your parents probably saw in the drive-In. It is an underrated 1978 Romance movie starring Lynn-Holly Johnson and Robbie Benson (voice of the Beast in “Beauty and the Beast”). This is a chick flick. However, it incorporates hockey and lots of ice skating! This movie can make even the most cynical person’s heart melt. There is a remake from 2011, however, it is horrible. Horrible. Don’t watch it…ever.
4. Jerry McGuire
“You had me at hello.” “Show me the money!” “D’you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds?” This film features Tom Cruise before the whole Oprah’s couch incident and Johnathan Lipnicki when he was really adorable. The movie is the perfect combination of sports and romance. Jerry is a sports agent who needs a big break after starting his own Agency, and René Zellweger is a single mom who falls hard for him.
5. Ever After
Time to be a little cliché’ her…“Ever After.” Yes, feminism has happened and we can rip Disney apart for it’s portrayal of helpless princesses, but this is not like that. Ever After is a live Cinderella, but she is by no means a damsel in distress, and there are no furry woodland creatures. This stars Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible 2). Couples are entitled to be a little corny on Valentine’s Day and believe in fairytales. End your love filled day happily “Ever After.”
