Who needs a date on Valentine’s Day anyway? It is simply a Hallmark holiday made up by society to make money and encourage single girls to eat candy. Before blowing up Facebook with less than loving feelings, grab some friends and make it a Girls Night In with some female empowered movies.
1. The Hunger Games
Fight off your hunger with some treats and watch heroine, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss did not need some guy to save her, she saved the guy. Nothing says female empowerment like wielding a bow and arrow. This is the perfect movie to watch with the girls. Are you in a tricked out arena with several other teens trying to kill you? See, this day just got better.
2. Bridget Joan’s Diary
Every lady over sixteen needs to own this movie. It has many life lessons, such as don’t dress up like a playboy bunny to a family party or wear a see-through blouse to work. Bridget is not stick thin. She puts her foot in her mouth and drinks too much wine. She has the habit of telling off the men in her life, which is very cathartic to watch. With all her flaws, Bridget still takes control of her life and does not let being single stop her from having fun.
Let’s face it ladies, someday somebody’s gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye…while getting kicked off a plane because you snuck into first class while drugged-up from your best friend’s evil bridesmaid. No matter how lonely and pathetic you feel that your life is, this Valentine’s Day…Kristen Wig’s is worse.
4. Legally Blonde
Reese Witherspoon throwing a box of chocolate at the television and screaming “LIAR,” while sulking over her broken relationship will ease anyone’s pain about being single. This movie has the inspirational aspect of Bridget Jones and teaches every lady a valuable lesson: don’t let males define you.
5. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
This is an oldie and a goodie. Two lifelong friends return to their high school claiming to have invented Post-It’s. While everyone tends to focus on love in the romantic sense why don’t you focus on the love of your best friend? Romy and Michele will remind you why you love your best friend so much and miss the 90’s.
Listen up ladies, sometimes your soul mate is not prince charming. Sometimes your soul mate is your best gal pal who understands that you’re crazy and does not judge you for going to law school to follow a guy. Remember one thing this Valentine’s Day: College is not where you find your husband; it’s where you find your bridesmaids.
