Welcome back to the Mount everyone, except COVID-19. Summer vacation is over and we have begun our fall semester, but the warm weather prevails! I advise you to take advantage of this summer-like sunshine because the first day of autumn is right around the corner: Sept. 22. Get out of your dorm (cave) or the classroom for a bit, and enjoy some fresh, unmasked air! If you need more persuasion, here is a list of things you can do to take advantage of the last days of warm weather on campus.
Picnic: Grab some food from Henry’s in the Hudson Building or the View in Aquinas. You can sit at a bench, or grab a blanket and stretch out on the ground for a picnic with some friends. If you have homework, bring it with you. After being locked up in your house or dorm for so long, the warm breeze and company will create a euphoric mood.
Exercise: Do you hate the gym? If so, walking is great exercise and MSMC has a beautiful campus for you to take in and explore! If you’re a gym junkie, great. But maybe you could switch things up a bit. Instead of running on the treadmill, go for a run around campus. Trust me, you’ll feel the burn. Not to mention, you have to wear a mask in the gyms on campus, but you don’t have to wear one outside!
Take a break: Find a shady spot or a bench near DC overlooking the Hudson River, and just relax. Bring a book, take some pictures, meditate, or sit in prayer. Just stepping away for a bit can help you clear your mind, and relieve you of some of your school, work or other stress. Get away from your machines and step back into nature like a true Romantic!
If you have some spending money and a car, or a friend with a car, here are some things you can do off-campus.
Drive-In Movie: Head over to Poughkeepsie and check out Overlook Drive-In Theatre, where you can enjoy the outdoors and a movie! They’re open seven days a week, rain or shine. This is a great place to hang out with friends, or you can go there on a date and feel like you’re in Grease. If you don’t have a bench seat like Danny Zuko or a big trunk, bring some blankets and folding chairs because you can take a seat in front of your vehicle.
Angry Orchard (21+): For those that are 21 and older, take a trip to the Angry Orchard in Walden, NY. Did you know that this popular company was in our backyard? It’s only 25 minutes away from campus! You can tour the orchard for $25.00, pick apples (pay for what you pick), or dine at their restaurant (inside or outside). They also have food trucks on Saturdays and Sundays.
Take advantage of these remaining summer-like days, stay safe and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re on campus or off campus, there’s so much to do, and you have the perfect weather for it!
