The SGA Club, Get Creative, held an event in which students decorated mugs and made crayon art on canvases to decorate their dorms. If you were not one of the 130 students at the event, don’t worry! You too can decorate a coffee mug in the comfort of your own home by following these simple instructions.

Things you will need:

            •           Plain white ceramic coffee cup

•           Sharpies in a variety of colors

•           Painters tape

•           An oven

•           A baking tray

•           A timer

Step One: Before you begin, wash the cup so that you are working with a clean surface.

Step Two: Plan out your design: Before you even start decorating, take time to look at models and find inspiration. It always helps to go on Pinterest and look up examples.  Make sure everything is where you want it to be before you make it permanent. If you are planning a geometric design, use painters tape to make sure your lines are crisp and straight.

Step Three: Once you are happy with your design, it’s time to start drawing. Use the sharpies to draw the design you’ve chosen on the mug.

Step Four: Once your design is complete, let it dry for at least 24 hours.

Step Five: When it has completely dried, you must bake the mug it so that it is safe for you to drink out of. Place the mug on a baking tray and put it in the oven before you turn it on. The next step is to set the oven to 350 degrees. Once the oven is fully heated, start a timer for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes you can turn off the oven, but leave your mug in the oven until it has completely cooled off. Drastic changes in temperature could crack your mug, so be careful!

Once the mug is completely cool, it is ready to drink from! (When it’s time to clean up, gently hand-wash it to preserve your design.)
