The Jonas Brothers Live: A Fan’s Perspective

by Brittany Ambrosino

The lights suddenly go black. Loud shrieks grow in volume, bouncing off the walls. Introduction music starts seeping through the air, as my favorite band comes to the stage.

It was October 11th, 2012 when the Jonas Brothers performed their “come back” concert at Radio City Music Hall. On this night, I was lucky enough to be chosen to be on stage. Thirty girls were picked to sing, dance, and interact with the boys. Whether you’re a fan of Joe, Nick, and Kevin or not, I think most can agree that being on stage with an artist or band you’ve looked up too for a long time is an amazing experience, and I can reassure this!

I’ve been a Jonas fan since middle school, have grown up with them, and have followed every career move they’ve made. It was such a surreal experience seeing what they see from stage and being able to interact with them on a whole different level.

After an almost 3 year hiatus, the boys took the stage once again to shock fans and spark the start to their new career. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, the Jonas Brothers are categorized as the Disney pop band that has innocent lyrics and light hearted ballads, but if you take a look into their lyrics, especially with their new music, you’ll find something different.

No longer are the boys signed to Hollywood Records, their old Disney record label. The Jonas Brothers now signed to their own label and are making music that is definitely different from their past material; they’re talking about real-life issues. During the concert, Kevin (lead guitarist of the group) stated, “We’ve been in the studio a lot, living it, working hard. It just feels like the right time to share our hearts with you through this new music.”

The Jonas Brothers featured three new songs this show. “Let’s Go” is an upbeat song about getting pumped up. It’s definitely a song in the running to be their first single. “First Time” is more of a techno/pop rock song, a different sound than The Jonas Brothers have ever done before. The song is about living in the moment and letting go of life’s problems. “Wedding Bells” is a song written by Nick that’s speculated to be about ex-girlfriend, Miley Cyrus. The song’s chorus states, “No, I don’t want to love if it’s not you, I don’t want to hear the wedding bells boom.” The song later goes into the second verse saying, “Shouldn’t you be more happy? Letting you see my truth, ’cause if you recall our anniversary falls eleven nights into June”. As Miley has stated, she’s currently engaged to actor Liam Hemsworth, and her anniversary with Nick was June 11th.

As a dedicated fan, I was so proud to see the band’s progression as artists. Their lyrics have grown and matured from containing a Disney-like quality to portraying real-life experiences. I definitely think it’s a great start and that all those people who were once skeptics could change their views on the boys with this upcoming and more mature record.
